NEW APPOINTMENTS

The Winnipeg Art Gallery has welcomed two new members to its management team. Debra Fehr was appointed Manager of Communications and Marketing, while
Alanna Keefe is now Director of Development.

Greg Unger has joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg as its Executive Director. Unger was the regional director for the Canadian Diabetes Association for the
past four years.

The Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba has announced that its dean, Glenn Feltham, has been reappointed to the post for another five-year term.

Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (TDS) has announced Ross A. McFadyen’s admission to the partnership of the firm. McFayden practices primarily in the area of civil litigation and administrative law and has been with the firm since 2000.

Former Conservative leader Stuart Murray was appointed CEO of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in September. Murray most recently held the position of CEO of the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation. The CMHR is slated to open in 2012.

Winnipeg lawyers Robert Dewar and William Burnett were appointed to Manitoba’s Court of Queen’s Bench in September. Dewar is a partner at local firm Hill Dewar Vincent, while Burnett is a partner at Thompson Dorman Sweatman.

Harris Interim Executives (HIE), a division of Harris Consulting, has welcomed Duncan Hamilton to its practice as Principal. Hamilton specializes in labour and employee relations.

JOINT VENTURES

Two Winnipeg businesses—STRATA Benefits Consulting Inc. and Pinnacle Staffing Solutions—have formed an alliance to provide Pinnacle clients with added benefits. Says STRATA president Glen Middleton: “We saw similarities in the way we do business and approach client solutions.”

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES

In July, downtown’s new Manitoba Hydro Place, designed by KPMB Architects (Toronto) and Smith Carter Architects and Engineers (Winnipeg), was awarded the 2009 Best Tall Building Award in the Americas by the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Smith Carter received another honour in August when its Winnipeg head office was recognized as the first LEED Platinum building in Manitoba.

Receiving a gold LEED rating are the ECO4 condo units in St. Boniface. Built by Winnipeg-based Dobie Properties, the condos are the first of their size in Western Canada to receive this certification.

Manitoba company Baby Sherpa was given three product awards by American consumer magazine Creative Child in August. The company’s children’s safety Harnesses Safe2Go and Short Haul Diaper Backpack both were recognized, while the Baby Sherpa Diaper Backpack was named the 2009 Top Choice of the Year Award.


For their long-time commitment to supporting the arts in Winnipeg, William and Shirley Loewen were awarded the Arts Champion Award at the 2009 Winnipeg Arts Council Awards in June. The annual award honours an individual or business patron who has demonstrated sustained support to the arts in Winnipeg. The Loewens were jointly nominated by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Opera and the Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Three local entrepreneurs were among the Canadians recognized as finalists for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2009. Congratulations to Bryan King, founder of High Speed Crow Inc. (Business to Consumer Products and Services); Charlie Spiring, CEO of Wellington West Holdings Inc. (Professional/Financial Services); and Wade Miller, founder of Pinnacle Staffing Solutions (Business to Business Products and Services).

BOARD NEWS

At its AGM on September 23, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet announced its Board of Directors. James Cohen, Glenn Feltham, David Filmon and Jim Ludlow will serve the second of their two-year terms this season, while Jean Giguère will serve an additional year to finish a term of office as Past Chair. New to the board are Barbara Axworthy, Gursh Barnard, Tina Keeper and Shaun Mayberry.

 

 

OTHER NEWS

Representatives from the University of Manitoba presided over the ringing of the NASDAQ closing bell in New York on, August 18. They were there to celebrate the Stuart Clark Venture Challenge, which was hosted by the Asper School of Business this past April.

In mid-September, the Manitoba Trucking Association launched phase two of its GrEEEn (Economic and Environmentally Efficient) Trucking Program. The program offers incentives to participants who introduce green technologies such as low rolling resistance tires and auxiliary power units. The program was developed by Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, the Centre
for Sustainable Transportation and the University of Manitoba Transport Institute.

The Canadian Association of Family Enterprises, Manitoba Chapter is hosting two upcoming events. On January 28, 2010, the Future Leaders of Manitoba Council, in partnership with the Business Council of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce will present the 2010 Annual Awards Reception: Celebrating Exceptional Manitobans. Now in its second year, the event will see awards given to exceptional young Manitobans in the areas of Community Service, Bussiness/Professional and the Arts.
